Pokemon Radical Red: Features, Difficulty & Download

The definitive guide to the most popular Pokemon FireRed difficulty hack, covering everything from v4.1 features to the different play modes.

Pokemon Radical Red is a FireRed enhancement hack by soupercell that pushes the game’s difficulty while adding nearly every Pokemon up to Gen 9, modern battle mechanics, and an extensive list of quality-of-life changes. It’s built on the Complete FireRed Upgrade (CFRU) engine and Dynamic Pokemon Expansion (DPE), giving it features like Mega Evolution, Raid Battles, and the Physical/Special split. Version 4.1, released in March 2024, added Scarlet and Violet DLC Pokemon, character customization, and new custom shinies. This guide covers everything you need to know before starting your run. What is Pokemon Radical Red?

At its core, Radical Red is a difficulty hack similar to Drayano60’s enhancement hacks. You get access to nearly all Pokemon, each with curated buffs to make more species viable. The game forces a Set battle style, prevents bag usage in gym leader fights, and imposes a soft level cap based on the next boss. Endgame bosses have max IVs, optimized EVs, and improved AI. The hack also introduces a revamped Game Corner, an IV perfecter in Celadon, EV training gear, and a move tutor that teaches Egg moves. The result is a challenging but fair experience that rewards team building and strategy.

Radical Red offers seven difficulty modes, from the brutal Hardcore Mode to a more relaxed Easy Mode with Min Grinding. Choose the mode that fits your playstyle.

ModeBestKey FeaturesBest For
Hardcore ModeMost restrictive; no items in battle, tough opponents, minimal grinding. No EVs.Veterans seeking the hardest challenge
Restrict ModeHarder than Normal RR but less restrictive than Hardcore. Bans broken strategies.Experienced players wanting a fair challenge
Restrict + Min GrindingSame as Restrict but with no EV grinding, making early game easier.Nuzlocke streamers or players who want challenge without grind
Normal RRThe standard experience. EVs allowed, items in battle, but still tough.Players who want the original vision
Min Grinding ModeNo EV training; stats are simplified. Still challenging.Players who want difficulty without grinding

“I personally enjoy difficulty hacks the most, which is why I consider ROM hacks like Clover and Vega to be the two best ones out there.”

Is Pokemon Radical Red complete?

The main story up to the Elite Four is complete, along with some post-game events. The game is still in beta, with more post-game content planned for future releases.

Can I use cheats in Radical Red?

Cheats are not officially supported and may cause bugs. The developer specifically warns against using cheats and will not accept bug reports if cheats were used. However, a community-maintained list of cheats exists for those who still want to use them. See our [cheats guide](/blog/pokemon-radical-red-cheats).

Which emulator should I use?

mGBA is recommended for Windows. On Mac, use OpenEmu. Android users can use myBoy, and iOS users can use GBA4iOS. Avoid Eclipse, PizzaBoy, and Twilight Menu as they are incompatible.

What is the level cap?
