How to Install Pokemon Radical Red on PC, Android, and Mac

Getting Pokemon Radical Red running on your device is a two-step process: patch a clean FireRed ROM, then load it in a compatible emulator. The game’s creator, soupercell, recommends using the official online patcher for the cleanest result.

What you need before you start

You need two things: a Pokemon FireRed (U) ROM (the 1636 Squirrels version — the patcher checks for this exact dump) and an emulator that works with Radical Red. The patcher does not include the ROM; you must supply your own copy.

Step 1: Patch the ROM

The online patcher handles everything in your browser. No downloads, no command line.

  1. Open the Radical Red online patcher in any modern browser.
  2. Click the file input and select your FireRed (U) ROM.
  3. Choose version 4.1 from the dropdown. If you do not see 4.1, clear your browser cache and reload the page.
  4. Click “Patch.” The patcher outputs a .gba file named something like radicalred_4.1.gba.

That file is your playable ROM. Move it to wherever you keep your games.

Step 2: Choose an emulator

Radical Red is picky about emulators. The creator has tested these and confirmed they work:

  • Windows: mGBA or VBA (VisualBoyAdvance)
  • Android: myBoy (paid, but the most reliable GBA emulator on Android)
  • Mac: OpenEmu
  • iOS: gba4IOS (if you can sideload it)

Do not use Eclipse, PizzaBoy, or Twilight Menu. The game is incompatible with these emulators and will crash or glitch.

Step 3: Load and play

Open your emulator, navigate to the patched .gba file, and load it. The game starts with the character customization screen — talk to the dresser in the starting room to change your appearance.

Troubleshooting common issues

“The patcher says my ROM is invalid”

You are using the wrong FireRed dump. The patcher expects a 1636 Squirrels ROM. Re-dump your cartridge or find a verified copy of that specific release.

The game crashes on a white screen

You are using an incompatible emulator. Switch to mGBA (Windows), myBoy (Android), or OpenEmu (Mac). If you are on a flash cart, check that it supports GBA games with the expanded memory features Radical Red uses.

Old save file does not load

Version 4.0 saves are compatible with 4.1, but you may lose access to new Pokemon and items, and your Pokedex progress may reset. The creator recommends starting a fresh save for the full 4.1 experience.

I want to use cheats

Radical Red has a built-in Rare Candy code (Woyaopp on NES) that unlocks the “Set To Level Cap” option at the Pokemon Center assistant. For other cheats, see the dedicated cheats page.

Which difficulty mode should you pick?

The game asks you to choose a mode at the start. Here is a quick guide:

  • Hardcore Mode — the hardest. Expect unfair team compositions and no room for error.
  • Normal RR — the original vision. Grindy but fair. You can use overpowered Pokemon freely.
  • Min Grinding Mode — removes EV/IV grinding while keeping the challenge. Good for nuzlockes.
  • Easy Mode — still harder than a vanilla Pokemon game. Bosses do not have EVs.
  • Easy Mode + Min Grinding — the most relaxed option. You can use items and Switch Mode.

If you are new to Radical Red, start with Normal RR or Min Grinding Mode. Hardcore is for repeat players.
